Keokuk-Fort
Madison Area Makes Top 100
Lee County Economic
Development Group was recently notified that Site
Selection Magazine and Conway Data announced that
Keokuk-Fort Madison along with four other Iowa areas placed
in the top 100 ''micropolitan'' communities in the country
for 2006.
The designation is based on
the number of new industrial expansions and locations. Of
the 3,142 counties in
the US , the Census Bureau classifies 674 of them as
micropolitan areas because they have a population under
50,000 and their local economies are largely
self-sustaining, according to the magazine.
“The
designation of Lee County being 60th out of 674
is a tribute to the Lee County Economic Development Group’s
efforts and successes,” said Lowell Junkins, Lee County
Economic Development Group Executive Director. “To be rated
by the people who make site selections,
as a top community, means that we were rated by the people
who are in the know about economic development
environments,” added Junkins.
“Five
years ago when we began LCEDG, we would not have even been
on the radar screen and now we are in the top 60. That is a
badge of honor to wear
for all of
us that made this happen,” Junkins added.
